What is a Pap smear?
Definition
The Pap test (Pap smear) is a cell examination of the cervix that is used for the early detection of cancer. The aim is to detect tissue changes at an early stage in order to treat precancerous lesions before cervical cancer develops.
Age recommendation and frequency
The Pap smear should first be carried out ate age 21. It should be repeated every 3 years. Cervical screening after 30 often involves co-testing with a Pap test and HPV test every five years. After age 65, cervical screening might be stopped after discussing with your healthcare professional.
Procedure
The doctor swabs cells from the cervix and cervix. These are stained and examined under a microscope in the laboratory.
Test result
An abnormal result does not automatically mean cancer. It only shows whether cells are healthy or show changes that require further examination or treatment.
Costs
Pap smears are covered by most health insurances.
